Bare rooted fruit trees Cradoc Nursery

Why go bare rooted ?

When deciduous fruit trees become dormant in the winter they can be lifted out of the ground and transported without pots and soil, that's why they are called bare rooted.

Dormant means that the trees have lost all their leaves, they are not growing and don't require nutrients or water.

That makes them perfect to transport as there is much less weight and no soil to worry about. Therefore bare rooted plants are generally a lot cheaper than potted ones.

Also because they are dormant they will not suffer transport stress, they sleep peacefully through the whole transport process from the nursery to your garden where they wake up in spring, ready to grow. All that is required is to keep the roots moist to stop them from drying out. This is done by bagging them in moist sawdust.

Who we are

Cradoc Nursery is a small production nursery in southern tasmania. We specialize in fruit trees - mainly heritage apples - as well as berries and native tubestock. To have a look at the native and other plants we grow, please visit our main website www.cradocnursery.com.au . Please note that orders on the two websites cannot be combined due to the different packaging requirements of the plants.

Everything we sell is grown on our property and we are intimately familiar with all our plants.

Most of our fruit trees are whip and tongue grafted which is much more labour intensive than the budding usually employed. But it also produces a much stronger and more durable grafting union.

We fully guarantee the quality of all our plants and are more than happy to give you a replacement plant or refund should you for any reason be unhappy with your purchase.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
